JONATHAN CEROWSKI RIBA SCA AABC EASA

Jonathan is a specialist conservation architect, with a wide range of experience in works to listed and unlisted historic buildings.

Prior to setting up Cerowski Architects, Jonathan trained under Ptolemy Dean, Nick Cox, and Donald Insall in Oxfordshire and London, before moving to a local practice where he grew a heritage team.

He is accredited with the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) at SCA (Specialist Conservation Architect) level, as well as with the AABC (Architects Accredited in Building Conservation). He is also a full member of EASA (the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association) which is the professional body focussing on works to church buildings.

He sits on the Church of England’s DAC (Diocesan Advisory Committee) for Chichester, and is a Specialist Advisor to the National Trust.

Jonathan has successfully led projects to a wide range of historic buildings, recently including a range of listed houses across Sussex, Surrey and Kent.

He is personally appointed as the Inspecting Architect for over 30 church buildings of various denominations, and regularly advises on highly sensitive works to buildings ranging from Grade I listed, to un-listed ‘non-designated heritage assets’.

In the past he has worked on nationally important buildings including The Houses of Parliament, National Trust and English Heritage properties, and Historic Hospitals.

Internationally he has worked for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in France, and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago in the capital city of Port of Spain.

Jonathan believes that ‘Conservation is the Management of Change’. Conservation should not seek to preserve a building in aspic, but rather demonstrate what is special about the heritage asset, and work to ensure that any alterations or extensions are not detrimental to that special character.

He is an avid sketcher and uses hand drawings as a design tool, as well as to explore the ‘spirit’ of a historic place.

Cerowski Architects was set up with the goal of working collaboratively with our clients to achieve their aims for the historic buildings in their care, whilst preserving and enhancing what makes their buildings special.
